Innovative radio technology keeps New Zealand’s firefighters safe

Wellington, New Zealand – 16 August 2016 – Firefighters serving with New Zealand Fire Service will benefit from improved safety and communication while working in fire grounds through an innovative two-way radio solution.

The new solution from Motorola Solutions and Spark will enable the service’s 10,000 career and volunteer firefighters to stay connected to their colleagues in the field via reliable and robust voice communication.

Having attended around 73,000 incidents in the past year alone, New Zealand Fire Service needs the best tools for the job. The organisation will receive more than 4,500 new radios designed for use in the most severe fire ground environments.

A major feature of the solution is a cornerstone Motorola Solutions innovation, a remote speaker microphone that will be fully integrated within firefighters’ breathing apparatus. This will be combined with the radio’s convenient push-to-talk button, which enables firefighters to communicate easily and safely in the harshest conditions.

Paul Baxter, Chief Executive & National Commander of the New Zealand Fire Service, said, “Communication is critical to safety on the incident ground, and much of that communication comes from the use of incident ground control (IGC) radio. That’s why we were so exacting in our requirements for these new radios.”

“The radios will help us to resolve radio interface issues with firefighters’ breathing apparatus while also delivering improved noise cancellation and battery life.”

By using a combination of single and multiband radios operating across both VHF and UHF bands, the solution aligns with the fire service’s vision of leading integrated fire and emergency services for a safer New Zealand.

“This radio solution enables us to move away from using a mix of models and frequencies and toward a nationally consistent standard that will make it easier to work with our emergency service partners,” Baxter said.

Murray Mitchell, Director ICT for the New Zealand Fire Service, said, “We wanted a solution that is safe, easy to use and doesn’t distract firefighters from their work during critical incidents.The design features incorporated in these new radios will help our firefighters work more safely and efficiently.”

Spark will provide in-country support including service management and a customer support desk. Spark Digital CEO Tim Miles said: “Radios are life-saving tools for our emergency services, and great team communication can be the difference between a managed incident and a disaster. We are very proud to play a part in improving the on-ground experience for our Kiwi Fire Service heroes.”

Motorola Solutions Managing Director for New Zealand and Australia Steve Crutchfield said the solution drew on his company’s experience in providing tailored, mission-critical communications for public safety agencies all over the world.

“Firefighters depend on reliable and robust voice communications in emergency situations so they can concentrate on the job of protecting our communities and potentially saving lives,” Crutchfield said. The radios are part of a five-year contract, giving New Zealand Fire Service operational and cost certainty throughout the life of the contract.

The contract also provides access provisions for related government agencies wanting to take advantage of the new radio technology.

Leading Provider of Mission-Critical Communications Will Have 1,100 Employees in Chicago

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI), the leading global provider of communications solutions for public safety and commercial customers, today cut the ribbon on the new Motorola Solutions global headquarters at 500 West Monroe in the West Loop.

The first teams of employees moved into the new building today, which will house six floors by mid-September. The move marks a return to Chicago for the company, which was founded in 1928 on Harrison Street.

“The story of Chicago and Motorola Solutions goes back nearly 90 years, and today we are writing a new chapter at their new home, right here in the City of Chicago,” Mayor Emanuel said. “This new headquarters will employ hundreds of people and give Motorola Solutions the tools they need to grow for generations to come – access to talent, transportation and capital.”

The headquarters will house the company’s chief technology office, ventures group, software engineering team and corporate functions, as well an innovation center showcasing the products and services depended on by the company’s 100,000 customers worldwide.

Motorola Solutions Envisions Virtual Reality Transforming Public Safety

Virtual command center future concept showcases today’s smart public safety solutions and tomorrow’s virtual reality technologies

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Aug. 10, 2016 – Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) is exploring a future where virtual reality will immerse a public safety command center supervisor in an incident scene. By using a combination of virtual reality and eye-interaction technologies to navigate through video and data feeds from multiple sources, incident responses can be quickly coordinated and information shared widely to help guide officers and protect people at the scene.

Motorola Solutions will show live demonstrations of the virtual command center on Aug. 15-16 at the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) 2016, held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. (booth #1337).

The virtual command center proof of concept uses eye-interaction technology from startup company Eyefluence, a Motorola Solutions Venture Capital investment, to envision the future of public safety.

A look at today’s smart public safety solutions

Today’s public safety command centers can integrate the Project 25 (P25) standards-based, interoperable ASTRO® 25 land-mobile radio (LMR) network for mission-critical communications with the power of LTE broadband and the latest in smart public safety solutions to turn data into intelligence.

Since 2009, Lake County, Fla. has been using Motorola Solutions’ ASTRO 25 LMR network as the core network for emergency interoperable communications for several counties across Florida. On Aug. 17, Greg Holcomb, Lake County public safety communications technology manager/E911, will join Motorola Solutions in a managed services panel discussion at APCO entitled “Systems Down: Best Practices for Eliminating this Status from Your Network Performance Logs” (see all Motorola Solutions presentations at APCO 2016 here).

“The Lake County core network and many connected sites on this P25 mission-critical communication system are managed by Motorola Solutions,” said Holcomb. “With their robust managed services offerings, the company ensures 24x7 availability, reduced risks and maximized performance for our public safety network.”

Motorola Solutions' CommandCentral platform provides real-time intelligence throughout all phases of police work – from planning, to operations, to investigations. CommandCentral Aware aggregates video from several sources, allowing crime center analysts to view multiple feeds on one screen and share high-definition images of suspects, vehicles, license plate numbers and other critical information to responding officers in real time.

Introducing new mission-critical solutions at APCO 2016

Motorola Solutions is launching the new APXTM 8500 P25 all-band mobile radio, updated ASTRO 25 network features and the IMPRES 2 energy management system.

  • APX 8500 P25 all-band mobile radio: With Motorola Solutions’ new APX 8500 P25 all-band mobile radio, first responders can use a single mobile radio to exchange critical voice and data communications – such as text messages and GPS coordinates – with multiple agencies and jurisdictions operating on different radio bands. Radio updates can be made instantly without interrupting voice communications; the radio does not need to be brought to a shop, saving both time and money. When connected to the Motorola Solutions VML750 LTE vehicle modem (now available globally), the APX 8500 frees up radio channels by offloading data to LTE.
  • APX Personnel Accountability for ASTRO 25 trunked networks: The APX Personnel Accountability solution is now available for ASTRO 25 trunked networks (which enable efficient operation of large systems with a small number of channels) and continues to also be available on ASTRO 25 conventional networks (where users select communication channels).
  • Commanders using the APX Personnel Accountability solution can automatically perform tactical notifications and streamline roll call processes via a computer. They can automatically account for staff using APX radios at the scene of an incident. If a team needs to evacuate, commanders can instantly alert them through their radios and receive acknowledgements. Commanders can monitor radio battery life, identify radios and receive radio power down indications. If a radio is on the wrong channel, a commander can remotely switch the channel to the right one and ensure the entire team can communicate with each other.
  • ASTRO 25 Enhanced Geo Select: Geo Select provides hands free operation of APX radios when entering a defined region, or geofence, and this feature is now available even if the radio is no longer on the network. When entering a geofence, APX radios can automatically take action such as change channels, alert the user and change power levels. No manual intervention is needed.
  • ASTRO 25 Over-The-Air radio software updates: ASTRO 25 Over-The-Air Programming (OTAP) has been available for radio managers to remotely program APX radios. Now they will also be able to update APX radio software over-the-air for their entire fleet simultaneously over the course of a few days, without disrupting radio function in the field. With this new feature, there is no need to bring radios to the shop for software updates, saving both significant time and money.
  • IMPRESTM 2 energy system for APX radios: The new IMPRES 2 high-capacity, water-resistant batteries keep APX radios powered longer. When combined with the new IMPRES 2 charger, they deliver 60 percent more charging cycles than traditional lithium-ion batteries. The IMPRES 2 charger’s enhanced diagnostics provide usage data including a battery’s ability to hold a charge, letting users know when it’s time to replace it. The multi-unit chargers also feature customizable charging – batteries in service can be charged at 100 percent while those in storage can be partially charged to optimize battery life.

Announces $2 billion increase to share repurchase program

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Aug. 4, 2016 – Motorola Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: MSI) today reported its earnings results for the second quarter of 2016. Click here for a printable news release and financial tables.

"Q2 was a strong quarter demonstrated by our growth in earnings, cash flow and backlog,” said Greg Brown, chairman and CEO of Motorola Solutions. “I am pleased with our progress heading into the second half of the year."

The company also announced that its board of directors has approved a $2 billion increase to the share repurchase program, raising the total authorization since July 2011 to $14 billion. Under the company’s previously authorized $12 billion share repurchase program, approximately $400 million remained at the end of the second quarter of 2016. The company may continue to repurchase shares from time to time in the open market or in other privately negotiated transactions, subject to market conditions.

OTHER SELECTED FINANCIAL RESULTS
Revenue – Sales increased 5 percent, including $146 million in sales associated with the Airwave acquisition. As expected, Products segment sales declined 8 percent primarily driven by weakness in Latin America, Europe and China. The Services segment grew 26 percent with the addition of Airwave, and posted growth of 4 percent in organic managed and support services. Excluding Airwave, the Services segment declined 4 percent due to lower systems integration revenues associated with the completion of a large project in Europe.
Operating margin – GAAP operating margin was 15.7 percent of sales, compared with 18.6 percent in the year-ago quarter, reflecting higher amortization and restructuring charges. Non-GAAP operating margin was 22.7 percent of sales, compared with 19.0 percent in the year-ago quarter, driven by higher sales and $31 million in lower operating expenses compared with the second quarter of 2015.
Taxes – The GAAP effective tax rate was 35 percent, compared with 30 percent in the year-ago quarter. The non-GAAP tax rate was 32 percent, compared with 35 percent in the year-ago quarter. The full-year non-GAAP tax rate is expected to be approximately 33 percent.
Cash flow – The company generated $292 million in operating cash from continuing operations, reflecting an increase of $143 million over the prior year, driven by higher earnings and improved working capital. Free cash flow2 was $201 million.
Cash and cash equivalents – The company ended the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $1.5 billion and a net debt position of $3.5 billion3. The company repurchased approximately $555 million of its common stock in the quarter and paid approximately $72 million in cash dividends.
Backlog – Ending backlog is $8.2 billion, up $2.2 billion from the year ago period, driven by the addition of $1.6 billion from Airwave and approximately $600 million of organic managed and support services.  Products backlog was up $64 million from the year-ago period.

BUSINESS OUTLOOK
Third-quarter 2016 - Motorola Solutions expects a revenue increase of 6 to 7 percent compared with the third quarter of 2015, which assumes approximately $130 million in revenues associated with the Airwave acquisition. The company expects non-GAAP earnings per share from continuing operations in the range of $1.17 to $1.22 per share.
Full-year 2016 - The company continues to expect revenue to increase 5 to 7 percent and non-GAAP earnings per share from continuing operations in the range of $4.45 to $4.65 per share.

More than 16,000 portable, in-vehicle mobile and fixed station radios will be used to address critical communications needs of public safety personnel, Brazilian Army and other first responders safeguarding the millions of visitors and residents.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 1, 2016 – Military forces will be using a variety of mission-critical communications technology from Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) and public safety forces from the State of Rio de Janeiro will be using TETRA Motorola Solutions radios to help ensure the security and safety of millions of residents and visitors.

The ICCC of Rio de Janeiro and the Army Operations Center (COp) will work together, making it possible to gather intelligence to carry out joint actions, such as delegation protection, protest management, incident prevention and routine activities in the region. In addition to radio communications, the COp will have full visibility of the real-time location of the officers in the field at the command center.

Improved safety and coordination enabled by applications helps identify criminals, find lost children and even prevent crime

SAO PAULO, July 19, 2016 – Using a special vehicle equipped with a mobile long-term evolution (LTE) security solution, Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) created a dedicated network to demonstrate the benefits that applications and high-speed data, along with mission-critical communications, bring to airports, logistics operations and public safety in the Federal District and São Paulo. Key stakeholders attended the demonstrations of LTE technology geared toward critical communications for both public and private organizations to learn about multi-media collaboration with real-time video, mapping, images, facial recognition and response teams, and about interoperability between mobile and fixed-line systems.

By creating an LTE “bubble,” or defined area of coverage, around a special vehicle, it is possible to use applications such as Command Central Streaming, which transmits buffer-less video to the command center and other personnel in real time. The application allows officers in the field and personnel in the command center to benefit from clear streaming video to help in expanding their view of an incident and making the best possible decisions.

Information is put in the hands of officers and on the screens at command centers thanks to the LEX L10 Mission Critical LTE Handheld, and includes other applications such as WAVE™ Work Group Communications, which extends push-to-talk (PTT) communications to broadband networks, connecting individuals in the same team who are using different devices, such a smartphones, computers or radios.

Other applications, like the one that makes it possible to recognize the face of a suspect, were also demonstrated. After identifying a suspect, other applications help to alert unified groups by sharing information through images, videos, and maps, while others allow the respondents to design a strategic plan.

For the private sector, applications can help with tasks like identifying faults in electrical networks, monitoring the location of workers and even sending an automatic alarm to the command center if a single worker is fallen and needs help.

In addition, the Secure Mobile Office application, developed in Brazil, offers multi-media collaboration, notes over maps in real time, text messaging, video, voice and remote databases access, with advanced encryption.

Motorola Solutions Foundation provides $2.81 million for Innovation Generation grants

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – July 12, 2016 – Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions (NYSE:MSI), announced today that it will grant $2.81 million to organizations to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education with a focus on women and minorities.

About 1 million students and teachers will receive an average of 120 programming hours from the foundation’s partner non-profit organizations in the upcoming school year. Programs will support students of all backgrounds with an emphasis on special populations underrepresented in STEM fields including girls and minorities.

“The vast majority of recommended programs support hands-on opportunities in engineering and/or technology,” said Matt Blakely, executive director of the Motorola Solutions Foundation. “This year we’ve expanded the number of grants that provide technology education focused on public safety.”

The Innovation Generation grant program, in its ninth year, was awarded through a competitive review process to 83 organizations. All recommended programs currently engage Motorola Solutions employees as volunteers or offer opportunities for future involvement.

Here are just a few examples of the impact the grants can have:

American Indian Science and Engineering Society – AISES (National): AISES will work with two middle and/or high schools serving primarily Native American students to build the capacity of eight educators to incorporate teaching skills related to robotics, and reach up to 100 students with interactive and age-appropriate STEM education activities through robotics programming.

Chicago Youth Centers – CYC (Chicago, Illinois): Through the CYC Maker Lab program students will learn how to code, manipulate vectors, use 3-D printers and more. In addition, students will take networking courses in IT essentials, routing and switching, the Internet of Things, and network security. Certification will be available upon successful completion and demonstration of proficiency in one or more of these courses.

Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton, Florida): The Women in Engineering/Computer Science program will provide about 400 female students enrolled in engineering and computer science majors with mentorship, networking events and hands-on activities. The goal of this program is to maintain students' interest in engineering and technology by fostering a supportive culture.

The Boys' Club of New York (New York, New York): The Boys’ Club Expanded STEM Program will provide about 100 low-income boys and young men of color in New York with focused, hands-on STEM classes in engineering, robotics and more. In addition, the Science of Smart Cities will teach students about mobile and wireless communications. Specifically, students will learn to send messages over long distances using custom-made radio frequency transmitters and receivers. They then will be tasked to build their own infrared transmitters and receivers.

United Cerebral Palsy (Chicago, Illinois): Life Labs' Innovation Lab is a hackathon-style program that gathers individuals with disabilities in teams to compete for the best innovation that will affect the lives of people with disabilities. The Chicagoland 2016 Innovation Lab will provide 100 college and graduate students an opportunity to learn and apply entrepreneurial methods to create solutions for people with disabilities as well as engage with expert mentors.

Workshops for Warriors (San Diego, California): Workshops for Warriors will provide orientation, course instruction, and hands-on training in computer-aided manufacturing and welding and fabrication to 150 veterans, wounded warriors and transitioning service members. Upon successful completion of the program, participants earn nationally recognized portable and stackable credentials including SolidWorks, Mastercam, the National Institute for Metalworking Skills, Immerse2Learn, and more.

PANAMA – July 1, 2016 – The Panama Canal has been a central link in the global supply chain for more than a century and, as of this year, the expanded waterway will double the amount of cargo it is able to handle, improving the efficiency, reliability and ease of international trade. To celebrate the expansion, the Panama Canal Authority (PCA) hosted public events at the new Atlantic and Pacific locks, which were attended by the authorities and leaders from 60 nations. The mission-critical instant communications traffic involved in managing the canal and the security of the inaugural events was handled by Motorola Solutions systems complying with TETRA and Project 25 (P25) standards. Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) also deployed MOTOBRIDGE, an interoperability solution that enabled communications between the different technologies to guarantee the constant and transparent flow of critical information.

More than 11,500 officers were responsible for security at the inaugural events using a communications system by Motorola Solutions that conforms to the P25 standard. To ensure constant, seamless contact among the communications systems of the PCA and the 20 agencies involved in the effort, a MOTOBRIDGE was deployed. This system is based on Internet Protocol (IP) and creates a communication bridge that allows different teams to work together, regardless of which communication standards they use, allowing the agencies to stay connected to the remote command and control center as well as dispatch facilities.

As a result, different teams were able to communicate quickly and hear each other clearly, with optimum levels of reliability and redundancy that ensured communications in the face of different types of events. Officers received high-quality audio and were able to respond more quickly thanks to applications like emergency alarm notifications set off by certain situations, call prioritization based on the type of event and how critical it is, and other intelligent features of the system.

A Canal that Brings Two Worlds Together

Critical communications are needed to guarantee that canal operations always run smoothly for the hundreds of ships, 10,000 workers and hourly operations at the Panama Canal. The PCA has been using Motorola Solutions' communications technologies for decades, both to coordinate with the pilots of the ships that pass through the canal and to fully manage the 80 km-long canal.

The three most important operations related to the canal include: dredging operations to maintain the waterways navigable and in good condition; controlling the hydrographic basins (dams) to guarantee both, the supply of potable water used for main cities (with more than 1.4 million people living in metropolitan area) and to operate the locks; and overseeing the entrance and exit of ships. In order to perform all these tasks, reliable, high-quality critical communications are essential.

The aquatic fleet, including 4 dredgers, 30 floating towing devices, 80 personal transportation crafts and more than 4,000 employees, uses radios by Motorola Solutions to coordinate their efforts. The TETRA communication devices allow agents to communicate with other devices in the system using voice and data services, like telemetry, text messages and localization.

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – June 28, 2016 – The future of broadband-led first response took center stage this month through a series of demonstrations where police, fire and emergency medical services personnel used a private broadband network, special-purpose applications and devices to show how public agencies will leverage new technologies to improve safety and operational efficiency through situational awareness and priority services.

Officials from Ohio public safety agencies, the state’s Multi-Agency Radio Communications System (MARCS) and OhioFirst.Net joined Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) to create five real-world, real-time scenarios that showcased the power of broadband data, devices and applications in everyday public safety. The demos previewed the experience agencies can expect from the network overseen by the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) as it expands across the country in coming years.

Officials are hosting Broadband Day today to review the pilot project and discuss how the technology presents new opportunities for policing, fire protection and overall emergency response.

Motorola Solutions created the events’ infrastructure and provided applications and devices for the demonstrations as it continues to strengthen its global leadership for long-term evolution (LTE) systems and smart public safety solutions.

Broadband Day attendees will have a chance to tour the demonstration network facilities and experience a hands-on demonstration of the innovative tools used in the pilot, interact with commercial partners and vendors as well as have access to the technical experts. SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – June 9, 2016 – With 79 percent more states and territories adopting a plan for next-generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) since 2014, Waukesha County, Wisconsin, officials realized it was time to upgrade their analog 9-1-1 communications to a proven call-taking solution built for the future. Leaders of the county of 400,000 people just northwest of Milwaukee chose Emergency CallWorks CallStation, a browser-based platform from Motorola Solutions (NYSE:MSI), which combines call taking, incident management and mapping systems into a single platform. CallStation also gets Waukesha County ready for NG9-1-1, which will allow citizens to send more digital information such as texts and pictures through the 9-1-1 network and, eventually, directly to first responders.

As the State of Wisconsin continues toward adoption of a formal NG9-1-1- plan, Waukesha County is already seeing benefits from key features of CallStation such as the interactive map that allows users to quickly determine the caller’s location before answering. As a community with a high volume of commercial transportation and automobile traffic, a significant accident could generate multiple calls from mobile phones and landlines for the same incident. In this instance, CallStation allows dispatchers to prioritize calls and dedicate resources to potentially unrelated 9-1-1 calls. Previously, call takers would have had to answer the call in the order it was received.

“Public safety dispatchers are often the first point of contact when citizens have an emergency, so immediately knowing where the call is coming from can save time and potentially save lives,” said Gary Bell, director, Waukesha County Communications. “CallStation features such as the interactive map allow users to quickly provide details from the 9-1-1 caller to public safety personnel en route to an incident or accident.”

Another time-saving feature of CallStation is the ability for one-touch transfer of calls. In the past when a caller reached Waukesha’s public safety answering point (PSAP) but needed to be transferred to another department or neighboring PSAP, multiple steps were needed depending on the type of call received. In 2015 Waukesha transferred approximately 23,000 of the more than 328,000 calls received by the seven PSAPs. The ability to transfer those callers with a single click saves call takers precious seconds they can allocate to emergency situations.

Waukesha County 9-1-1 staff attended the Emergency CallWorks Online University before implementing the new software to help ease the transition. Classes provided an in-depth discussion and use of CallStation, which enabled call takers, on their schedule, to become familiar with the new system and reduce the time spent with a live trainer from a traditional daylong session to just two hours.
