Customizable user interface delivers prioritized, contextual intelligence to public safety devices

Orlando, Fla. (IACP, Motorola Solutions, Booth #2201) – Oct. 23, 2014 – According to the Motorola Solutions Inc. (NYSE:MSI) 2014 Public Safety Survey, 70-percent of first responders say successful data transmissions can be as important as receiving voice communications. Motorola Solutions' new Public Safety Experience (PSX) uses a dedicated mission-critical user interface, real-time context management and a suite of applications to help deliver the right data to a user’s device at the right time, based on the individual’s status and activity.

The Public Safety Experience allows personnel to monitor multiple data feeds that adapt to the high-stress situations often faced by first responders. It reacts to the current situation and officer status to enable rapid access to vital information without distracting from the mission. The home screen presents relevant data from the most used applications such as mapping, messaging and search engines. The activity screen reveals key information during events such as traffics stops or emergencies. The overlay screen is designed for quick, anywhere access to core applications such as WAVE™ Work Group Communications for broadband push-to-talk, covert mode, emergency activation, phone and contact list.

KEY FACTS

  • The Public Safety Experience allows agencies to configure and customize the PSX user interface based on their agencies’ workflow and operating procedures, helping to provide a uniform and safer experience.
  • The PSX user interface presents the data on a device in a concise way that allows first responders to multitask, while still maintaining situational awareness. On patrol, a user’s location is shared and potential threats and available resources are highlighted for maximum awareness. When an officer is dispatched, it highlights incident information and the best route to the scene to help improve response time. On the scene, customized workflows appear on the screen so a first responder knows exactly what procedures to follow. Information such as date, time and location automatically appear in the report to help enhance safety, efficiency and accuracy.
  • PSX incorporates context management that keeps track of users across Project 25, LTE and other networks, maintaining user attributes such as identity, credentials, priority, presence, location, group membership and environmental context. These attributes are securely managed and shared with data applications used by the agency to improve awareness and collaboration across all users.
  • PSX applications deliver mission critical data in the form of push-to-talk voice, query responses, mapping, incident details, field reports and real-time video streaming. Broadband push-to-talk also is available for instant group communications. These applications help agencies deter crime and connect with citizens. By automating manual processes, they help reduce error rates and the time to process misdemeanors.
  • The first Motorola Solutions device to feature the PSX user interface is the new LEX L10 Mission-Critical LTE handheld, which also is being launched at IACP.

SUPPORTING QUOTE

Paul Steinberg, chief technology officer, Motorola Solutions

“Motorola Solutions’ Public Safety Experience uses innovative software to deliver mission-critical data that users need on their devices, whether they are in the office, responding to an incident or in an emergency. The PSX user interface streamlines data to help officers arrive on the scene quicker and better prepared. The instant a situation changes from routine to life threatening; it adapts to the officer’s needs, enabling focus on the threat rather than the technology.”

Motorola Solutions Reaches New Milestone with 3,000th Trunked DMR Radio System

on Thursday, 16 October 2014. Posted in Two Way Radio Industry News Blog

October 14, 2014

Motorola Solutions announced today the 3,000th deployment of its digital trunked MOTOTRBO™ radio system. Businesses in over 100 countries around the world are now using the capabilities of MOTOTRBO trunked systems to enhance safety, efficiency and accountability by connecting their employees better.

The 3,000 MOTOTRBO trunked radio systems are in service worldwide, with customers such as Tan Cang - Cai Mep International Seaport Terminal in Vietnam; Yangzhou Taizhou Airport in China; South-Western City School District in Ohio; Nation Pizza and Foods in Illinois; JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa in Texas and the Plein Disposal in Canada. Businesses such as Fisher Wireless in California are even using MOTOTRBO trunking systems to build digital two-way radio networks for public use.

In 2007, Motorola was the first to market with digital radio products based on the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) DMR standard, and in 2010, the first to offer a trunked radio solution based on the DMR standard. By 2011, the company had announced the shipment of the first million DMR radios.

MOTOTRBO DMR-BASED TRUNKING SOLUTIONS:

  • Our top-tier MOTOTRBO trunking solution, Connect Plus, has a dedicated control channel, and multi-site capacity with thousands of subscriber radios per site. It was launched in 2010 and has expanded its capacity by more than 700 percent from the initial release.
  • Always innovating, Motorola used the transition to digital two-way radio as an opportunity to rethink traditional trunking – resulting in the development of Capacity Plus. Launched in 2011, using innovative “distributed trunking” architecture, the system allows the co-location of multiple repeaters on one site.
  • Widening the benefits of Capacity Plus, Linked Capacity Plus provides distributed trunking on multiple repeaters at many sites. Capacity Plus and Linked Capacity Plus also allow customers to implement “data revert” channels, so that voice and data can be managed using separate resources.
  • All three trunking solutions offer full data capability, with advanced features and functionality. They are compatible with the extensive portfolio of voice and data applications available from the Motorola PartnerEmpower™ program, which enable customers to build a tailored solution to meet their business needs.

Motorola Solutions to Reduce Pension Plan Liability by $4.2 Billion While Preserving Benefits

Actions will reduce pension funding volatility; Prudential to provide same benefits to retirees

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. and NEWARK, N.J. – Sept. 25, 2014 – Motorola Solutions, Inc. (NYSE:MSI) today announced that it has reached an agreement with The Prudential Insurance Company of America, a Prudential Financial, Inc. company (NYSE:PRU), under which Prudential will assume responsibility for the monthly pension benefits for retirees. Motorola Solutions also will offer eligible U.S. pension plan participants the opportunity to apply for lump-sum pension payments. In total, these actions are expected to reduce Motorola Solutions’ ongoing U.S. pension obligation by $4.2 billion. The company plans to contribute $1.1 billion in cash to its U.S. pension plans in 2014.

“We have substantially reduced the funding volatility associated with our pension plans while protecting benefits for retirees,” said Gino Bonanotte, Motorola Solutions chief financial officer. “Our retirees’ benefits are not changing, just who provides them.”

In the third-largest transaction of its kind, the Motorola Solutions Pension Plan intends to purchase a group annuity contract from Prudential under which Prudential will pay and administer future benefits to the approximately 30,000 retirees who currently receive payments. The transaction is expected to be completed in 2014, with Prudential assuming responsibility for making the benefit payments beginning in early 2015. Prudential is entrusted with managing the pension benefits of 1.6 million participants at more than 5,700 companies.

In addition, approximately 32,000 pension plan participants will be able to apply to receive a lump-sum payment of their accrued, vested pension benefit. To be eligible, participants must have left the company before June 30, 2014, and accrued a pension benefit but have not yet started receiving benefit payments. Participants must apply for the opportunity during the application period of Oct. 2, 2014 to Nov. 7, 2014. Total lump-sum payments will be capped at $1 billion, with the smallest amounts qualifying first.

“We are pleased to be selected to help Motorola Solutions continue to deliver on its pension obligations to retirees while also reducing risk and volatility for the company,” said Phil Waldeck, senior vice president and head of Pensions and Structured Solutions for Prudential Retirement. “Guaranteeing benefits has been a part of Prudential’s core business for more than 85 years. We look forward to welcoming these retirees to Prudential and providing them with retirement income security.”

There are no changes for active employees who participate in the plan. Motorola offered the pension plans to U.S. employees hired before Jan. 1, 2005, with no additional benefits accrued for participants as of March 1, 2009.

Affected pension participants will receive detailed mailings regarding these changes in the following days, with call centers opening next week. For more information, pension plan participants not yet receiving payments can call (866) 656-8918 starting Sept. 29, 2014. Retirees currently receiving pension payments can call (866) 697-0181 starting Oct. 2, 2014.

Delivers clear communication between event organisers on land and sea during the regatta

Santander, SPAIN – Sept. 11, 2014 – Motorola Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: MSI) today announced that the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships, one of the most important events organised by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), relies on a dedicated MOTOTRBO™ professional digital two-way radio system for clear communications to enhance event management and the safety of competitors at sea.

With Santander 2014 acting as the opening qualification regatta for the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition, high numbers of ships and sailors are attending, and competition is fierce. In total almost 100 nations and 1,500 sailors are expected to take on the big swell challenge of the Bay of Biscay.

Motorola Solutions has collaborated with the ISAF, to provide the most comprehensive, custom radio network for a sailing competition. Deploying Motorola Solutions’ MOTOTRBO Capacity Plus system with digital two-way radios, the organisers at Santander 2014 are provided with an integrated voice and data communication network able to meet the complex, simultaneous communications demands of this large-scale international event.

From a central control and dispatch centre, organisers can stay in constant contact with all teams with high-quality coverage throughout the eight coastal zones that contain the sailing circuits, encompassing almost 90 km² of sea centred on the Bay of Santander. The system offers increased capacity and via SmartPTT, an enhanced control room solution, the provision of Global Positioning System (GPS) integration, text messaging and voice recording of six simultaneous boat crew calls to safely manage the sailing events.

The network incorporates 140 MOTOTRBO DP4400 and DP4401 radios supplied to the ISAF management teams, which are organised across 15 radio Talkgroups. Providing best-in-class audio and unrivalled co-ordination capabilities, the radios help provide an effective management and control solution. The radios deliver exceptional voice quality, which is important in high winds and the rugged waterproof design means they can survive being immersed in the sea.

The deployed network is not only unique; it is also the most effective in the Cantabria region, ensuring that the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships, an event of global importance, will be well managed and as safe as possible for all taking part.

Key Facts

  • The MOTOTRBO Capacity Plus system created and installed for the ISAF Sailing World Championship is a single-site digital trunking system that maximises the capacity, speed and flexibility of the MOTOTRBO system. This enables a high volume of voice and data communication, capable of supporting more than 1,000 users, providing an effective management and control solution without needing to add new frequencies.
  • The network deploys three DR 3000 Repeaters to ensure high-quality communications over wide areas of sea. It supports 15 radio Talkgroups to optimise communications between ISAF management teams and boat crews, delivering greater efficiency and improving race operations. Seven Talkgroups are associated with the competition areas and the rest are deployed for event services managing security, logistic and maintenance.
  • The networks support 120 MOTOTRBO DP4400 two-way radios for use by the organisers, with a further 20 MOTOTRBO DP4401 with GPS radios distributed to crews of the organiser’s boats. The radios offer noise reduction software, incorporate an emergency button and are IP57 specified for submergibility.
  • For enhanced race management and safety of yacht crews, SmartPTT enables the position of boats to be graphically represented in real time across the eight sailing zones by using the GPS on the DP4401.
  • Racing commences in Santander, Spain, on Friday September 12.
