Motorola Solutions’ Digital Two-Way Radio Technology Enhances Mission-Critical Communications at Munich Airport

COLOGNE, Germany – November 23, 2016 – Motorola Solutions has received an order to implement a comprehensive update and extension of its existing TETRA digital two-way radio system at Munich Airport.
The newly modernized communications infrastructure ensures greater connectivity, interoperability and collaboration between various business and operational functions at Germany’s second largest airport. Motorola Solutions will also provide services for ensuring smooth operations.
Within the framework of the TETRA radio network refresh, Motorola Solutions is equipping the airport with a new MCC 7500 IP Dispatch Console. The comprehensive, scalable solution enhances the IP architecture to ensure optimum call set up and availability. It will also allow Munich Airport to expand its communications infrastructure in the future without interrupting existing services. As well as this, Motorola Solutions will implement two TETRA base stations for improved TETRA radio coverage in the terminal buildings.
Alongside the improvements to the TETRA system, the airport has started a pilot project for the potential introduction of Motorola Solutions’ broadband push-to-talk (PTT) platform WAVE. The goal of the installation is to ensure that airport staff can communicate, no matter which device or infrastructure is being used. The powerful PTT solution WAVE™ Work Group Communications provides airport authorities with secure and reliable communications beyond TETRA radio – including broadband devices and networks – to enable greater workforce connectivity, interoperability and collaboration. WAVE connects the TETRA system used by administrative staff with service management employees who join the broadband platform via smartphones, computers, other radios or telephones, meaning that staff across the airport can communicate with one another from virtually any location.

Mexico City - Nov. 17, 2016 – Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) will conduct a demonstration of the solutions, applications and devices designed specifically for mission critical communications for public safety on a broadband network at today’s Meeting of Leaders in Security and Innovation in Mexico City.

During the demonstration, the company will highlight some of the innovative solutions it has developed to boost the contribution that a broadband network for public safety can make in preventing, managing and mitigating problems that affect citizen safety. The meeting is aimed at authorities from public and private organizations, public safety and innovation experts and opinion leaders -- all key players in the construction to a safer Mexico.

In the case of natural disasters – which usually call for cooperation between national and regional public safety forces, armed forces, fire fighters and medical first responders – the combination of interoperable solutions and specialized public safety solutions on a broadband network allows different agencies to communicate, even if they use different communication technologies. In addition, authorities that regularly use cellular devices can be added to the group through an application and be given access to coordinated radio communications.

CHICAGO – Nov. 10, 2016 – Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) today announced that it has completed its acquisition of Spillman Technologies, a leading provider of comprehensive law enforcement and public safety software solutions for computer-aided dispatch (CAD) and records management systems (RMS).

Spillman, headquartered in Salt Lake City, provides public safety software to more than 1,700 agencies throughout the United States. In addition to CAD and RMS, Spillman offers an integrated suite of comprehensive software solutions and next-generation tools for jail management systems, fire, mobile data, data sharing, field reporting, mapping and geographic information systems.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Spillman Technologies is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola Solutions and will be integrated into Motorola Solutions’ Smart Public Safety Solutions business.

Bravo Expands Strategic Partnership with Motorola Solutions to Unify Communications and Enhance Public Safety in Saudi Arabia

The integrated messaging client allows users to share images, video, voice clips and location. PSX also includes integrated mapping that shows where talk group members are located and offers immediate ways to communicate with them.

The company also today announced that its board of directors has increased its regular quarterly dividend by 15 percent to 47 cents per share. The next quarterly dividend will be payable in cash on Jan. 13, 2017, to stockholders of record at the close of business on Dec. 15, 2016.

Revenue – Sales increased 8 percent, including $131 million in Airwave sales. Products segment sales declined 1 percent due to softness in Africa and China. The Services segment grew 23 percent including Airwave, while Managed and Support Services grew 5 percent excluding Airwave.
Operating margin – GAAP operating margin was 22.3 percent of sales, compared with 16.2 percent in the year-ago quarter. The improvement reflects higher sales and gross margin associated with Airwave, as well as lower operating expenses. Non-GAAP operating margin was 25.8 percent of sales, compared with 20.5 percent in the year-ago quarter, driven by higher sales and gross margin as well as $27 million in lower operating expenses compared with the year-ago quarter.
Taxes – The GAAP effective tax rate was 34 percent, compared with a tax rate of 36 percent in the year-ago quarter. The non-GAAP tax rate was 33 percent, compared with a non-GAAP tax rate of 35 percent in the year-ago quarter.
Cash flow – The company generated $348 million in operating cash from continuing operations, reflecting an increase of $47 million from the year-ago quarter. Free cash flow2 was up $29 million to $280 million, driven by higher earnings.
Cash and cash equivalents – The company ended the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $1.7 billion and a net debt position of approximately $3.4 billion3. The company repurchased approximately $109 million of its common stock and paid approximately $70 million in cash dividends.

Motorola Solutions Has Been Selected to Modernize Paraiba’s Radio Communication Network

JOÃO PESSOA, Brazil- October 21, 2016 – The Paraiba Secretariat of Social Safety and Defense signed a contract with Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) for the upgrade of its mission-critical communication system with TETRA-digital radio technology to provide interoperable communications among the state’s public safety agencies.

The system will integrate, in a unified platform, the communications of all its public safety agencies – the Military Police, Civil Police, Fire Brigade, Penitentiary System, and State Transportation Department (DETRAN). The new system is expected to help improve the efficiency of their operations throughout the state, which covers an area of about 57,000 km2. All communications among users will be encrypted, thereby preventing unauthorized persons from listening in while also protecting the police involved in potentially dangerous operations.

The upgrade to a DIMETRA IP solution is part of a series of investments made by the Paraiba State Government to improve the service provided by its public safety agencies. "This is a structuring measure to consolidate the Integrated Public Safety System that will help our agencies perfect their response and offer citizens a quality service," said Cláudio Lima, Paraiba’s secretary of social safety and defense.

Initially, the TETRA system will include 40 sites that will bring a clear, reliable signal available to public safety agencies throughout the state. The system also includes 35 dispatch consoles, which will be used to receive, prioritize, and make calls to quickly respond to citizens' needs. There are additional antennas and base stations designed to guarantee statewide radio system coverage. The contract also provides for the delivery of approximately 5,600 radios, including 4,000 portable, 1,300 mobile and 332 fixed radios.

"Paraiba’s old system was analog and communication among the agencies wasn't possible. With the new system, we will be able to integrate the communications of all our public safety agencies and increase coverage so that none of our responders lose their connection if they go to another city or areas where there is no radio signal," Cláudio Lima explained.

Digital technology also allows for the development of a wide range of technological applications for public safety, such as GPS. "All the terminals that were purchased have built-in GPS and can be tracked by the digital network, which has a very powerful host computer. That computer provides the exact location of every terminal, whether it is a vehicle terminal or HT (handheld terminal) carried by the police officer," the Secretary pointed out. He added that the new system will also make it possible to identify the public safety officer closest to an incident, in order to provide a quicker and more effective response.

In addition to these benefits, digital communications also offers superior signal quality, with clear audio and background noise-free communication, as well as a secure, encrypted network that makes it impossible for unauthorized users to monitor communications or listen in.

The virtual command center demonstration immerses a participant into an incident scene through the eyes of a command center supervisor. New digital radio system cleared for takeoff at London Gatwick Airport

BASINGSTOKE, UK – September 28, 2016 – Motorola Solutions is launching its MOTOTRBO Capacity Max system at London Gatwick Airport in the south of England, alongside authorised channel partner Servicom. The airport is one of the United Kingdom’s most important transport hubs, with more than 4.6 million passengers travelling through it this July alone.

The state-of-the-art system will bring enhanced voice and data communications to 1,300 users both airside and groundside. Ground staff, security personnel and maintenance teams across the airport will all benefit from the new innovation, and there are plans in place for further expansion.

The new Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) system will double the capacity of the existing analogue network and is fully scalable, in readiness for the airport’s ongoing growth.

In addition to reliable and secure voice communications, airside and groundside teams at Gatwick will also be able to take advantage of Capacity Max’s powerful data performance with new applications.

These include TRBOnet PLUS, a dispatcher application that enables voice recording, mapping and event logging in the control room, and iBeacon indoor positioning, which allows alerts to be sent to individual radios based on location. With the new system, central controllers can dispatch the closest employee to an incident, saving staff valuable time.

Other built-in functions include settings for lone workers, geo-fencing to create restricted areas and automated escalation protocols, which will bring upgraded safety and security capabilities.

As the hardware is connected to WiFi, software updates can be sent to equipment quickly and with less load on the radio network.

EL ORO, Ecuador – September 27, 2016 – The deployment of Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) digital radios means more than 60,000 residents of El Oro Province, customers of the Zaruma Urcu Transportation Cooperative, will now benefit from a more efficient taxi service. The taxis of the Zaruma Urcu Transportation Cooperative are now equipped with a MOTOTRBOTM digital radio communication system, which has brought uninterrupted communications and greater efficiency to the operation, while making it possible for drivers to provide a more flexible service to passengers.

The new radios provide the taxi fleet communications with superior audio quality, allowing drivers to share data in real time. For instance, in a situation of heavy traffic, blocked streets or any emergency that a passenger could have, the driver can send an emergency signal to central administration, which allows dispatchers to have the exact location of the vehicle and take the appropriate actions.

In addition to these benefits, the radios include an application that provides messaging, voice recording and GPS localization tracking. ROME, Italy – September 22, 2016 – Motorola Solutions provided the teams at Christo’s Floating Piers art project with a reliable and comprehensive communications system based on its powerful MOTOTRBO two-way radio infrastructure and radios.

The art project took place at Lake Iseo in Northern Italy, between Milan and Venice. From June 18 to July 3 2016, the landscape was reimagined and reinterpreted by Christo, the artist known for his wrapped monuments, with his Floating Piers installation. More than 1.2 million guests visited the installation. The project was highly complex and involved many contributors to provide a number of services including transportation, security, emergency services, municipal police and local fire departments. In order to coordinate all the parties involved, there was the need for reliable and smart communications.

“The Floating Piers consisted of three kilometre-long walking platforms for pedestrians, composed of 220,000 cubes floating on water draped in 100,000 square metres of bright yellow fabric. It was built on the lake and freely accessible to visitors,” explained Fabio Cadonici, sales director, Saitel Telecomunicazioni. “It was a great challenge to guarantee the safety of this project, which we were able to achieve thanks to the enhanced voice and data communications of Motorola Solutions MOTOTRBO platform.”

Motorola Solutions provided an end-to-end MOTOTRBO communications platform for the project consisting of the following elements:

  • For efficient collaboration of the transportation teams, a Motorola Solutions SLR 5500 repeater has been delivered as well as 30 portable two-way radio terminals for communication in shuttle buses and among the operating staff.
  • Communication between security staff on the Floating Piers walkway was guaranteed thanks to a DR 3000 repeater and 120 DP1400 portable two-way radio terminals.
  • For security in the other affected areas, roads and paths, an MTR3000 integrated voice and data base-station/repeater and 200 Motorola DP1400 portable two-way radio terminals were supplied.
  • Additionally, 20 Motorola DP1400 radios and 20 compact DP3441 two-way digital radios facilitated the management of Christo’s team communications.
