SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – July 29, 2015 – With more than 80 percent of the population in Canada shopping at its stores, Canadian Tire managers know that clear and reliable communications are crucial to smooth business operations and good customer service. Motorola Solutions’ (NYSE:MSI) new digital license-free radio (DLR) is helping Canadian Tire-Meadowvale employees solve problems rapidly and improve customer satisfaction.

The lightweight DLR has functions tailored for the retail industry such as a “private reply” button that allows a conversation to take place between two employees without interrupting other conversations. It also uses the latest digital technology to provide extended range not found in analog radios. This means users will have consistent, clear and interference-free communication capability within 300,000 square-feet of retail space or 25 floors, helping store associates stay connected to each other and their customers.

With older analog radios, sometimes conversations can be interrupted and employees on opposite sides of the store are unable to communicate. “Motorola Solutions’ DLR allows us to go beyond our customers’ expectations when they walk into the store,” said Scott Morash, general manager, Canadian Tire-Meadowvale. “The features and functionality of Motorola Solutions’ DLR give our employees the ability to communicate quickly, efficiently and without interference from other employees or other noises throughout the entire store.

Additional features of the DLR include a “direct call” option allowing users to press a button at the top of the radio and speak privately to individuals instead of to a larger group, meaning others can stay focused on customers. Users can also “page all available” so one person can communicate a message to all users available in all channels. The DLR can also be paired with accessories such as an ear piece to help store managers and employees use discreet communications to stay connected.

Canadian Tire managers reported that most of their employees learned how to use the DLR in a matter of minutes, and became fully functional on the device midway through their shift. Public Safety Communications Wins Gold at Island Games

Basingstoke, England, July 14, 2015 – Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) provided enhanced operational and public safety communications to Jersey 2015, the XVI Island Games. The company extended support from the island of Jersey’s Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) network to more than 200 organizers and 400 volunteer ‘Games Makers’ who assisted the Island Games events.

The most important event of the year for Jersey, the Island Games attracted thousands of visitors to support young sportsmen and women from 24 smaller islands communities such as Rhodes, Greenland, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Menorca, Froya, Gotland, Gibraltar, Guernsey and Jersey, competing in events at an international level. This year more than 3,000 athletes took part in more than 900 events, encompassing 14 sports at more than 13 separate venues, with more than 1,500 medals being awarded.

From archery to volleyball, cycling to sailing, the wide range of sports created a demanding challenge for the games committee, where dependable communications were critical to the success of this unique competition.

Motorola Solutions donated tough, reliable TETRA MTH800 two-way radios and multi-unit battery chargers to the Island of Jersey to equip the Games Makers with dependable communications to ensure a safe, enjoyable experience for the attending islanders and approximately 5,000 visiting fans.

Operating on their own distinct radio channel with integration delivered by Motorola Solutions, the Games Makers could be instantly located anywhere around the Island. Radio calls were also monitored by emergency services for rapid response, with a select talk group established to enable the games committee to communicate directly with the emergency services when necessary.

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA - June 18, 2015 – For the first time ever in Colombia, Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) will conduct a demonstration of the solutions and devices designed specifically for mission critical communications on public safety LTE networks.

The demonstration will feature different situations that first responders may face to illustrate the benefits that public safety LTE technology offers to improve prevention, management and resolution of crime and emergency events.

For example, the demonstration will illustrate how:

  • A missing child can be found more quickly by immediately distributing photos to mobile phones or to screens in patrol cars
  • Public safety command centers can access video from security cameras and vehicles in an area and distribute that video to officers assigned to the event
  • Information sent in advance from a command center to officers en route can help them respond to crime and save lives
  • Images can be sent from the scene to assigned units so they have more information and can better prepare before they arrive

In the case of natural disasters – which often require the support of national and provincial security forces, armed forces, fire-fighters, medical first responders and civil defense organizations – the combination of interoperable solutions and public safety LTE technology make it possible for many different agencies to communicate, even if they use different communications technology. And, public safety LTE technology will enable public safety agencies that regularly use cellular devices to have access to coordinated radio communications through an application.

With Public Safety LTE technology, information can be turned into life-saving mission-critical intelligence in real time through the high-speed transmission of data, images and video, improving the effectiveness of preventive measures and actions taken by security and emergency agencies. The comprehensive agreement will provide reliable and high performance communications for the biggest distributor of electricity, gas and water in the region of Rhine-Hessen. As part of the agreement, Motorola Solutions will install, run and maintain the radio network, provide technical support and provide hardware and software updates during a five-year period.

It is Motorola Solutions’ largest contract with a utility company in Europe or Africa.

EWR Netz GmbH will rely on a consistent and robust “service level agreement” with transparent fixed operating costs, eliminating the need to manage network complexity, hardware and software upgrades. The trade legislation, passed by the U.S. Senate last month and pending a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives, is critical for the growth of any global business. The legislation would establish concrete rules for international trade negotiations that would promote growth.

Motorola Solutions 2014 Corporate Responsibility Report highlights investments in employees and communities; details reduced environmental impact

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – June 8, 2015 – Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) released its 2014 Corporate Responsibility Report today and marked significant progress in its investments in employees and communities and in reducing the company’s overall carbon footprint. The report reflects the company’s commitment to responsible practices and continuous improvement to become a more sustainable company.

“Our measurable progress on many environmental metrics reflects the dedication and professionalism of all Motorola Solutions employees,” said Terry Bell, vice president, Environment, Health and Safety Solutions. “The 2014 report gives us a report card on the progress made in managing our environmental impact and being a positive force in the communities where we do business around the world.”

The report shows that in 2014, the company:

  • Reduced its carbon footprint by 36 percent, used 30 percent less water and cut total waste by 17 percent compared with 2013 totals
  • Collected 572 metric tons of electronic equipment waste for recycling through “take-back” programs
  • Used renewable energy sources for 47 percent of its power in the U.S., as it continues to aim for a global goal of 30 percent of power coming from green sources
  • Encouraged more than 3,500 employees to participate in 275 volunteer projects that resulted in more than 80,000 hours of volunteer work for schools and other charitable organizations

TETRA Radio System Used in Chinese Nuclear Power Plant for First Time

The customer becomes China's first nuclear power plant to use a TETRA communications system able to withstand a magnitude 8 earthquake. Beijing, May 25, 2015 – Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) today announced that, after a series of rigorous anti-seismic tests, its TETRA digital radio trunking system has won the digital communications project bid from Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant in Lianyungang. This is the first time this type of TETRA communications system will be used in China's nuclear power industry. In the future, Motorola Solutions will also serve as Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant’s partner for all important command/dispatch and emergency communications network systems thanks to its equipment’s safe and stable operations as well as the company’s emergency handling.

As the largest per-unit capacity plant in China, Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant has the safety performance of a third-generation plant with a high operations management level. The stable operation of a nuclear power plant is critical, especially in emergencies such as natural disasters. During Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant’s equipment selection process, the TETRA communications system from Motorola Solutions successfully passed the anti-seismic tests organized by the customer, making Motorola Solutions China the first TETRA supplier to have passed these tests in the country.

To meet requirements of Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant, Motorola Solutions provided high-reliability system equipment and a large number of highly stable TETRA two-way radios and mobile radios. The entire communications system offers powerful functions and is able to handle routine command/dispatch operations as well as large volumes of emergency communications with ease. Among them, the MTP850Ex radio is intrinsically safe, meeting the international ATEX (ATmosphere EXplosible) and IEC-Ex (International Electrotechnical Commission Scheme for Certification to Standards for Electrical Equipment for Explosive Atmospheres) standards. It can still be used safely in a hazardous environment with explosive gases and dust.
