ESN will support a network based on 4G public safety LTE technology with voice and broadband data services, such as the ability to send photos and video, for Great Britain’s police, fire, rescue, ambulance and other public services.

“As a company trusted with providing emergency and public safety agencies with innovative, reliable and secure critical communications technology, we are honored to have been selected for this opportunity,” said Manuel Torres, senior vice president of Europe and North Africa Sales & Support Services. “We share ESN´s commitment and vision to equipping emergency and public service agencies with the functionality and capabilities that a broadband-based network can offer.”

Motorola Solutions has been a relied upon communications partner to the emergency services community in Great Britain for more than 45 years.

Motorola Solutions completes Nødnett, Norway’s advanced mission-critical communications network

  • Nationwide coverage encompasses 330 emergency call centers connected by 2,170 base stations and more than 20,000 kilometers of transmission lines
  • Installations overcame icebound Arctic locations at -40°C in the winter darkness
  • Network includes 758 kilometers of road tunnels

Motorola Solutions Takes Networking to the Extreme

OSLO, Norway, Dec. 4, 2015 – Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) announces formal, on-schedule completion of Nødnett, Norway’s new nationwide digital Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) communications system for public safety and rescue users. This achievement was commemorated with an event attended by His Majesty King Harald V of Norway and Minister of Justice and Public Security Anders Anundsen.

Nødnett is the most advanced mission-critical communications system in the world and one of the largest contracts in Motorola Solutions’ history. The network’s size, complexity, innovative technology and the extremes of Norway’s geography and climate made installation a challenge.

“From coastal fjords to the mountains, and from urban centers to the remote Polar North, the task of providing nationwide secure and resilient communications across Norway’s complex and challenging landscape has been expertly managed by prime contractor Motorola Solutions,” said Tor Helge Lyngstøl, director general, Directorate for Emergency Communication (DNK), Norway.

The nationwide coverage encompasses 330 emergency call centers connected by 2,170 base stations. More than 45,000 users from the police, fire and health agencies, plus voluntary rescue organizations, customs and more are making nearly 1.5 million calls each month over the Nødnett network.

To complete Nødnett, Motorola Solutions installed more than 20,000 kilometers of microwave transmission lines – more than enough to run from Oslo to Mexico City and back again. Norway's high latitude means the northern sites are shrouded in darkness 24/7 during the winter months with temperatures plunging to a chilling -40°C. With the network reaching far north into the Arctic Ocean to Svalbard, installation teams often climbed 50 meters up entombed radio towers to remove by hand stunningly beautiful, but problematic ice.

The network coverage also extends through 310 road tunnels for 758 kilometers, about eight hours of solid driving without ever seeing the light of day. The tunnels include the Laerdal tunnel, the longest road tunnel in the world, and the world’s deepest sub-sea tunnels, the Eiksund and Bumlafjord tunnels.

In all, Motorola Solutions teams drove 817,000 kilometers conducting radio coverage testing, the equivalent of 20 times around the equator. Nearly 14,000 kilometers were traveled by helicopter to test air-to-ground-to-air coverage.

The completion of Nødnett is just the start for Motorola Solutions. The company will maintain and provide operational support for the next 10 years, strengthening the network and providing further functional capabilities. One-third of all Nødnett base stations are already equipped with TETRA Enhanced Data Services (TEDS) and Motorola Solutions has provisioned WAVE™ Work Group Communications to deliver enhanced connectivity, interoperability and collaboration for Nødnett by offering radio-like ‘push-to-talk’ (PTT) on smartphones and connected devices. The network is also ready for public safety broadband bearers, such as long-term evolution (LTE).

“This reliable, nationwide, end-to-end encrypted TETRA network now replaces hundreds of aging regional public safety systems. Despite operating in some of the most remote parts of Europe, the police, fire, paramedic and health agencies have access to clear, secure and immediate data and voice calls so that they can communicate together and save lives,” said Manuel Torres, senior vice president and general manager Europe, Africa and Latin America, Motorola Solutions.

Nebraska County Goes Beyond Call of Duty with Highly Affordable 9-1-1 Deployment

on Monday, 30 November 2015. Posted in Two Way Radio Industry News Blog

Douglas County puts Motorola Solutions’ computer-aided dispatch on virtual platform allowing dispatchers easy access to centrally shared resources

  • Douglas County reduced costs 67 percent by using a virtual platform to implement Motorola Solutions’ PremierOne™ computer-aided dispatch (CAD)
  • Virtual CAD deployments allow centrally located hardware and software to be shared between agencies, helping save taxpayers money by not requiring expensive technology at each position
  • Call takers and dispatchers using PremierOne CAD have access to a full suite of applications and features from any virtual workstation running the software, helping save time in an emergency

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Nov. 30, 2015 – Douglas County, Nebraska, officials were faced with the same public safety communications challenges as many other communities across the country – how to do more with fewer resources while efficiently using taxpayer dollars. When it came time to replace an old 9-1-1 computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system that handles approximately 600,000 calls each year, Douglas County chose to have Motorola Solutions’ (NYSE:MSI) PremierOne™ CAD deployed on a virtual platform, allowing dispatchers simple access to centrally shared resources, saving time and money.

A virtual platform centralizes CAD hardware and software resources, creating virtual workstations within the dispatch center where all existing dispatch positions can use the same resources. This set-up resulted in a 67 percent reduction in equipment costs for Douglas County. Instead of purchasing expensive equipment for each of the 32 dispatch positions, the virtual platform allows technology such as high-end video cards and data processing applications to be stored on one server and shared between multiple users and dispatch centers.

“As we’ve migrated through the technology and virtualized Motorola Solutions’ software, the cost savings and ability to share resources has been exceptional,” said Mark Conrey, communications director, Douglas County. “Instead of installing a $2,000 computer at every CAD operator’s workstation, the county can spend $400 on a virtual machine and get better technical capabilities and performance while saving taxpayers’ money.”

Call takers and dispatchers using PremierOne CAD are able to access the system from any virtual workstation running the software, helping save time in an emergency. Having consistent user configurations requires less set up and management for each workstation, making it easier for support staff to manage each position. The virtual platform also provides a boost to Douglas County’s network by giving users access to high-speed Ethernet connections that may have been too expensive for the county to purchase on its own.

“The three dispatch centers using Motorola Solutions’ PremierOne CAD in a virtualized environment have seen an immediate improvement in collaboration between agencies,” said Tom Guthrie, vice president, Motorola Solutions’ Smart Public Safety Solutions. “For the dispatcher it means a quicker response to callers, access to information from virtually anywhere and seamless integration with surrounding county systems.”

At the same time, Douglas County officials added additional Smart Public Safety Solutions by integrating PremierOne Records into its CAD and Premier Mobile Data Computer for officers in the field. PremierOne Records simplifies the capture, storage and retention of data, which can further improve the county’s ability to securely share information with other agencies. Premier Mobile Data Computer gives users access to CAD information about a situation while en route to the scene.

  • EWR Netz GmbH of Germany expands 39-site TETRA network with WAVE Work Group Communications from Motorola Solutions
  • First WAVE utilities deployment in Germany provides enhanced connectivity, interoperability and collaboration by extending the reach of TETRA to LTE push-to-talk (PTT) smartphone communications

IDSTEIN, GERMANY – Nov. 17, 2015 – The German power grid operator EWR Netz GmbH is using innovative WAVE™ Work Group Communications from Motorola Solutions to deliver enhanced connectivity, interoperability and collaboration to its entire communications network.

IMotorola Solutions’ WAVE technology extends the reach of EWR’s Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) digital radio system to already deployed Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. When control room and office-based personnel can use their own smart devices to securely communicate on TETRA voice channels, collaboration with radio-equipped field teams is faster, leading to improved response times and more successful event outcomes.

I“WAVE is a powerful business tool that allows us to create a unified push-to-talk environment where everyone can participate in business-critical communications, even if they are not using a TETRA radio,” explained Johannes Krämer, CEO EWR Netz GmbH. “This capability enables us to systematically extend our existing 39-site Motorola Solutions TETRA network to meet future requirements.”

EXTENSION OF HIGHLY AVAILABLE TETRA SYSTEM

IThe biggest distributor of electricity, gas and water in the Rhinehessen region has been successfully using Motorola Solutions’ TETRA infrastructure since 2007 to provide a secure and independent communications platform for their employees.

IWAVE now allows EWR Netz GmbH to extend its highly available TETRA network to its partners such as public utility companies, municipalities and local distributors in the region. In cases of emergency or breakdowns, employees can access pre-defined TETRA communications channels using their mobile devices equipped with the WAVE Mobile Communicator application. The internal and external users are still able to leverage the benefits of their TETRA technology, but can also connect and set up group calls with their employees via public radio networks. This is enabled by MOTOBRIDGE, which is a scalable, cost-effective IP-based solution for quickly establishing communications between different systems.

FUTURE LONG TERM EVOLUTION (LTE) BROADBAND CONNECTIVITY

"Our WAVE technology enables EWR and their local partners to communicate flexibly and reliably at any time, no matter which network or device they are using,” said Klaus Dieter Drossel, sales director for key accounts, Motorola Solutions Germany GmbH. “We provide a hybrid solution that extends the reach of EWR’s network beyond the current radio system, enabling connectivity to established mobile devices or even broadband networks in the future.”

IFor further interoperability and performance enhancements, EWR will deploy Motorola Solutions’ LTE PTT devices like the Motorola LEX L10 mission-critical handheld device.

Motorola Solutions is exceeding these requirements with the introduction of the new feature-rich, next-generation MOTOTRBO trunking solution called Capacity Max.

“Capacity Max builds upon our innovative MOTOTRBO digital two-way radio solutions to deliver enhanced capability and expanded capacity,” said Tim Clark, director, Sales Channel Products and Programs, Europe and Africa. “The rich feature set and increased resilience equips our customers with dependable, mission-critical mobile communications.”

MOTOTRBO Capacity Max also supports the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) standard for multi-vendor interoperability, including the Tier III mode of operation.

FAR BEYOND TRADITIONAL VOICE COMMUNICATIONS

Capacity Max supports the industry-leading MOTOTRBO Application Developer Program where Motorola Solutions has created the largest ecosystem of in-house and third-party applications on the market. The application portfolio offers customers true value-add solutions that have expanded the capabilities of two-way radio far beyond traditional voice communications. Examples include control room solutions that enable efficient management of mobile workforces and automated alarm management that enhances safety and improved response times.

A SCALABLE, HIGHER PERFORMANCE AND LOWER COST SOLUTION

The new MOTOTRBO solution is scalable from small, single-site systems to large, complex projects that demand greater capacity (up to 3,000 users per site) and higher levels of performance from voice and data-intensive communications deployments. Customers also gain greater control through sophisticated management and monitoring tools that optimize the performance of the MOTOTRBO radio communications system.

The simple and efficient system architecture utilises a standard Internet protocol (IP) network with a centralized server – further reducing cost of ownership. Multiple levels of fault tolerance ensures that there is no single point of failure and the system is extremely secure, with optional Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption. To minimize cost and operational impact for existing customers, Motorola Solutions has enabled a smooth migration path from legacy analogue and MOTOTRBO solutions to Capacity Max.

A HISTORY OF DMR LEADERSHIP

Motorola Solutions has a long and successful history in the DMR market:

  • First to market with a product certified to the DMR standard
  • Launched MOTOTRBO DMR-compliant products in 2007
  • Delivered millionth MOTOTRBO radio in 2011
  • Deployed over 3,000 MOTOTRBO trunked systems by 2014
  • The company’s comprehensive DMR portfolio of MOTOTRBO solutions includes portable and mobile radios, repeaters, data applications and accessories, as well as software and services.

Motorola Solutions has made major contributions to the DMR standards and is the only member of the DMR Association that contributed intellectual property to the standard.

* trunking is a method used to increase radio system efficiency. Instead of permanently allocating radio channels to a specific purpose, a trunked system temporarily allocates a channel from a pool of available channels, and only when it is needed. After use, the channel is returned to the pool. Using this method, it is possible to operate a large system with a small number of channels, saving cost and resources.

Mall of America® Goes Digital with Secure, Always-Available Communications from Motorola Solutions

on Friday, 13 November 2015. Posted in Two Way Radio Industry News Blog

Largest mall in United States is expanding and Motorola Solutions’ MOTOTRBO™ digital two-way radios are replacing old analog system to meet mall’s growing needs

  • MOTOTRBO system provides continuous coverage over a large area, coverage that can be increased as the mall expands
  • Motorola Solutions’ digital technology helps eliminate dead zones, static and call interference which plagued the mall’s older, analog system
  • Motorola Solutions and partner Infinity Wireless upgraded the radio system to serve more than 12,000 employees and 40 million annual visitors to Mall of America

SCHAUMBURG, Ill – November 12 –Mall of America®, the largest mall in the U.S. and one of the most visited destinations in the world, is expanding and has chosen Motorola Solutions’ (NYSE:MSI) MOTOTRBO™ digital two-way radio system to help improve communications and provide flexibility for additional capacity to accommodate future growth.

The mall, located outside Minneapolis, Minnesota, is already the size of some cities and home to 520 stores, more than 50 restaurants, the largest indoor theme park and other attractions. The mall needed to enhance security with instant, always-available communications as the older, analog system experienced coverage and frequency issues, as well as static and interference which hindered employees’ ability to communicate.

“Mall of America operates like a municipality in that our operational entity is vast and our employees can be anywhere and everywhere at any time,” says Chad Martin, communications manager, Mall of America Security Department. “We need to know that our radio communications are seamless and that as technology advances, we can integrate our radios with other systems such as those used by local public safety agencies. MOTOTRBO provides that reliability for all departments, from security and engineering to housekeeping and grounds keeping.”

The four-level mall, with 5.5 million square feet of retail space and punctuated with concrete walls, parking ramps and service corridors, uses a MOTOTRBO system to help eliminate potential dead zones and allow mall staff to communicate clearly at any moment.

Unique features of MOTOTRBO radios were crucial to Mall of America officials’ decision to switch to Motorola Solutions. In the past, radio interference made it difficult for mall dispatchers to know who was calling or to understand messages. Now with a radio caller ID feature, users know where a call originates, such as an exterior maintenance vehicle, patrol officer or housekeeper. MOTOTRBO’s “transmit interrupt” feature allows users to send priority transmissions so they can immediately break into radio traffic and convey instant information.

“Visitors to Mall of America expect an enjoyable and secure environment,” said Claudia Rodriguez, vice president, Devices Product Management, Motorola Solutions. “Motorola Solutions’ MOTOTRBO digital radio system and Infinity Wireless are helping mall officials create that environment with the latest digital radio communications for security and other mall personnel.”

Mall of America staff worked with Motorola Solutions’ partner Infinity Wireless to upgrade the analog radios to MOTOTRBO digital communications. MOTOTRBO XPR 7550, XPR 5500 and SL 7500 Series two-way radios were distributed to employees in security and other departments to provide loud, clear and reliable communications in more rugged, slimmer and lightweight devices.

A multi-million dollar expansion of Mall of America, which will likely include additional retail, attractions, hotel and office buildings, is planned during the life of the contract with Infinity Wireless and Motorola Solutions. The flexibility of the MOTOTRBO system will allow additional radios to be deployed, and coverage and capacity can be expanded using MOTOTRBO Capacity Plus to accommodate new users.

New centre to show the leading edge of mission-critical communications technology, fostering collaboration and co-creation of innovative solutions with customers

  • Innovation Centre to incubate broadband innovation for the public safety and enterprise sectors
  • Displays smart public safety vision to transform how technology supports first responders

Melbourne, Australia – Nov. 9, 2015 – Motorola Solutions opened its new Australian Innovation Centre today, creating a centre for collaboration and technology co-creation with its customers and partners to solve everyday challenges faced by the public safety sector and heavy industries.

Motorola Solutions also unveiled its vision for the future of public safety at the event, Next Generation Mobile Intelligence (NGMI), which harnesses a mix of mobile broadband technologies to place the right information into the hands of Australia’s first responders so they can make better and faster decisions to keep communities safe.

Technology demonstrations based on everyday events helped to bring the NGMI vision to life and highlight the difference that greater infield intelligence will have in enabling public safety agencies and industries reach new levels of safety and performance.

This included the use of the latest software applications developed with Motorola Solutions’ smart public safety solutions partners to analyse criminal patterns within ‘big data’ to solve crimes faster and more efficiently, as well as intelligence-led public safety and citizen engagement solutions which help law enforcement agencies anticipate and respond to incidents with the best information available.

The latest, mission-critical public safety devices are also on display – from body worn cameras used to capture, store and manage vast amounts of video evidence, to field deployable public safety LTE units to create instant broadband access in emergencies and drones designed specifically for public safety use.

The centre was officially opened by Victorian Innovation Minister, Philip Dalidakis, who challenged Victorian businesses and entrepreneurs to continue to drive innovation in the state.

Motorola Solutions’ US-based chief technology officer, Paul Steinberg, also spoke at the launch, highlighting the importance of broadband innovation for the future of public safety and enterprise industries.

“It’s a critical time for public safety and industry in Australia when constrained resources, costs and growing expectations from stakeholders and customers are adding pressure on performance,” Steinberg said.

“Sustained, mobile broadband innovation is the way forward for public safety organisations and businesses to capture the data sources that that are growing rapidly all around us - putting it to better use to reach higher levels of safety and productivity. That’s the challenge that Motorola Solutions and its growing community of technology partners will be collaborating on together at our new Australian Innovation Centre.”

25,000 Motorola Solutions digital TETRA radios for fire departments, emergency services and civil protection agencies will “keep cities safer”

IDSTEIN, GERMANY – Nov. 6, 2015 – The German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein has started the migration to TETRA digital, mission-critical communications radio technology for 1,500 non-police public-safety organizations. Used by fire departments, emergency services and civil protection agencies, the new Motorola Solutions devices will enable users to respond faster and more effectively to keep cities safe.

To mark this important milestone, Christoph Thomas, managing director, Motorola Solutions Germany GmbH, personally delivered a specially designed MTP850FuG radio emblazoned with the crest of Schleswig-Holstein to the representatives of the regional authorities of the state.

Motorola Solutions was awarded the order by the Central Procurement Office of Schleswig-Holstein AöR (GMSH). The company will deliver and deploy approximately 25,000 TETRA devices including MTP850FuG TETRA portable radios and MTM800FuG TETRA vehicle mobile radios, as well as accessories such as antennas, headsets and protective holsters.

The robust and reliable TETRA digital radio solutions have been developed for mission-critical users and support end-to-end encryption in accordance with the requirements of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) to ensure highest security standards. Encryption protects radio communications from being heard by people for which they aren’t intended, including criminals. The radios also have an intuitive user interface for ease of use in moments when every second counts.

“The TETRA digital radios from Motorola Solutions succeeded during the EU-wide mobile radio tender for our non-police public safety authorities in Schleswig-Holstein,” explained Hans-Adolf Bilzhause, managing director of the GMSH, which conducted the tender for the communal state associations of Schleswig-Holstein. “The comprehensive assessment revealed that the radios are the best solution for secure communications of fire departments, emergency services and civil protection in Schleswig-Holstein.”
